Default Warning for HID Fog Light conversions users!

About a year ago, i bought a set of HID Extra HID fog light conversions for my 06' stock fog lights. The install was simple and they worked great. They were very bright and threw a decent beam. But the 9006 style bulbs it came with never seemed to fit right in the housings. Regular Halogen bulbs would go right in and twist lock into place firmly and easily. The HID's fit into the housing fine, but they would not twist in place easily. It took a lot of effort and once they did lock in, they felt loose.

Less then 3 months later one bulb had blown out and their was moisture in the housing. The simply did not seal well in the stock housing. So i just removed both of them and went back to stock Halogen.

Last week i figured i would try again. So i went on Ebay and picked a different design. Still super cheap, $32.00 for a set. This brand was Xentec. They arrived and the first thing i noticed was how much smaller the ballasts were. Literally half the size and made of plastic. The install was just as simple and the bulbs seemed to fit a little more snug. Like the first kit, these were simple plug in, no splicing.

They powered up and worked fine. Later that night, i took the truck for a drive to see how they worked at night. Not as bright as the HID Extra, not even close. But still not bad. Drove home, with them on, no issues.

Last night i leave work after dark, turn on the Fog's. Their were a lot of street lamps on the highway so i could not even tell if they were working. But if they were, they seemed very dim. I pulled into my driveway and got out and although the dash indicator said my fog lights were on, they were not. I pushed the button off and then back on. This time the fog light indicator came on again but it looked like my dash lights were pulsing slightly. The fog lights flickered on and then off. So i pushed the fog light button again, dash lights pulsed again, then my Radar Detector and AeroForce Interceptor powered off and came back on again rapidly. When the Interceptor came back on, the display was upside down and faded and the dash lights were pulsing. I quickly shut the truck and fog lights off.

Pacicked, i climbed under the truck and unplugged the ballasts. Then restarted the truck and THANKFULLY everything was back to normal. Interceptor as well. No clue what happened. The AeroForce unit only draws power from the OBD-II port and my Radar Detector gets power from a direct wire from the ciggarette light plug.

The has now convinced me to NEVER install cheap Chinese made electrical products on my truck ever again. Not worth it. I would be out of my mind had my $400 radar detector and $250 Interceptor been damaged or anything else too!

Beware anybody looking at these systems.

Thank you sir. I was just looking at the Xentec for the mains. The feedback for that component seemed pretty good. Also the ad pined on and on about the quality of the ballasts and the .002 fail rate. blah blah

Glad all is well

The quality may be great. I am only speaking from my personal expierience. I just found it bizzare that i had these issues and the potential to do serious damage exists.

Tad bit on the scary side. Doing a thousand $'s worth of electrical damage with a 30$ component. Sounds like it is a HID ballast, with a side of EMP.

P.S. check that thread where you mentioned the genos garage cup holder. Myself and another wanna see pics if you dont mind taking one. I dont know how it fits. The site doesnt show pics. It looks like it attaches to the front of the center console and extends it

You have to wonder about the quality on a product that so many vendors can sell for $30.00 with shipping included. When i ordered HID headlights on my 05' 300C, the cost was over $1,000. ONE new bulb was over $100.

I know tons of people who have no issues at all with these cheap systems. But after the nightmare i saw last night, i am done. Not worth the risk.

Jesus, did you need reconstructive surgery on your *** after you bought those headlights too? Where did you even find an HID kit for $1,000?

It was a factory option. Not aftermarket.

Well, things get much cheaper after they lose the initial shock affect of initial consumer release. I did not pay atention and all the sudden it was possible for cheap. I was taking a look at options when NV installed the 30$ EMP's in his truck. No thank you sir, Ill keep the headlights I have. Besided they work better with a couple relays attached and when I hit the hi's, all 8 lights come on. Really lets the darkness know where to find the light.
