I use one of those black plastic oil catch pans you can get at autozone thats completely open on top, tuck it under the filter, and let it lay on the steering rods, spin the filter off, let it drip for a while until it stops, remove the whole thing-----no muss, no fuss. I'm also using the 1 qt filter which is larger than stock.

I think you guys just need more practice changing oil....LOL

I never get any splashed on me. I break mine loose and spin in slowly with my hand so a little gets on my fingers and then once its loose I just carefully lower it in my oil bucket. Keep in mind mine is lifted so Im higher which means the bucket is farther away that yours.

As for the oil pan bolt, I did away with that a long time ago and bought a Fomoto valve with a 3/8 nipple. When I wanna change oil I just connect a rubber hose to the nipple and open the valve. No mess and no wrench needed.

I usually punch a hole through both layers of the oil filter with a big nail and let it drain. Still get some oil on me but not a huge mess. Going to try that bottle idea as well.

From what it looks like in all the pictures of that part, it does not not really do anything but tilt the filter away from the steering rack. But it does not actually relocate the filter off the block. And another issue i don't like, putting the filter on an angle means you would not be able to fill it with oil before installing it.

Has anybody ever done a true remote filter setup on a third gen? If so, what parts did you use?

Holy crap they actually make money selling that stuff? By the time the average Joe buys oil, drain plug gaskets, oil catch pans and oil guide trays, the cost of an oil change is through the roof!!

I use a windshield washer bottle. What i do is cut the tip off, then cut the bottle pretty mush in half, but retain the handle so i can hold onto it. It makes the perfect guide tray funnel or whatever you wanna call it.

For my truck, if i remember correctly, if you loosen up the oil filter just enough so it starts to drip, the oil will run to the outside of the filter and miss the fram completely. It's a slow drain like that, but it works. I wear two pair of nitrile gloves, once the filter is down and the drain plug goes back on, the outer gloves come off. By the time i remove the other set of gloves, my hands dont even need to be washed...lol

Just unscrew it a little till it drips and let it run untill it stops then take it off
