Default Getting oil everywhere when changing filter?

2007 Hemi. Is there any way to change the oil filter without taking a bath in oil? I get oil all down my arm, it pours down over the steering rod and runs along that in every direction, and it practically shot out all over the driveway. I have cardboard down but it shot over the cardboard! It just gets everywhere. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Well once you break the filter loose you can slip over a zip-lock baggie over the filter and all the oil should go in the bag.

That's a good suggestion. I'll try that next time! I knew there had to be a simple solution.

I have the same issue. Poor design having the filter directly above the steering unit, but then again, not too many ways to fix the issue at the factory short of using a remote oil filter setup. Which i have considered adding.

I take a 10-20 page newspaper and drape it over the steering unit with the crease on top. This way when the oil starts coming out, it will not get on the sterring unit or crossmember. Just on the cardboard and newspaper.

I use a windshield washer bottle with the bottom cut out. Slip it over the filter and spin 'er loose. The filter drops into the bottle - no muss, no fuss.

I have only done mine once but next time I'm just going to take a smaller pubch/chizzle pound it in then either put a small pan or get lucky and the small stream will clear the steering ect when you remove it depending where you pound it in

There's no way to rig up a drain tray like the 4.7 has?

On any car you get some oil coming out when you break the filter loose. Usually a small amount that I would contain with just a rag over the filter while im unscrewing it. But with This truck the amount of oil that come out is crazy. I had a big wad of paper towels all balled up under the filter and it soaked thru the towels. It seems like a 1/4 of a quart comes out!
