Best Option on Condensing Fan Motor
We all know about the condensing fan motor issues on the 2002 Rams. I hate to open the system and install a new motor and shroud housing. Are there any less espensive ways to replace just the motor? BTW, the idiot that designed the refridgerant line to pass through the housing should be fired.
Yeah there is.
There is absolutely no need to evacuate the AC system.
Do a search on here about AC condenser fan replacement.
It involves cutting a slot in the plastic fan shroud and sliding off and away, the shroud from around the AC coolant pipe afer removing the shroud mounting bolts.
Access can then be made to remove and replace the fan and motor, after removing the AC cooling radiator bolts etc.
I've done this and it's a 2-3 hour shady tree project.
Simple and saves a huge amount of stealership money lol.

Thanks Guys,
That is just what I did. I was already doing a valve job and had everything out of the way. I just cut the little area around the freon line, removed the 4 10mm bolts holding the shroud to the condenser and put in a new fan unit. I then replaced the blown relay and she is done. Total cost $132.04 including tax and 59 mins of my time.

abarmby,
This was my second trip with 3rd gen Ram AC issues. I bought a new 02 that developed this problem. The dealer told me that the new motor used a redesigned shroud and that the system would have to be opened. I paid the $700 and went on my way. Now years later, my son owns an 02, and we have to revisit this problem along with the know head gasket issue of the 4.7. Since I already had the radiator and the front of the engine out, it was easy to see that the freon line could simply pass through the shroud with a little snip of the shroud. I simply pulled the battery, took the bolt out of the fuse block and flipped it over to where the battery was and went to work on the fan. Like they say, it was not my first rodeo now and I did not fall for the BS. Fool me once...... Again thanks for the help.
