Default 3.90 gears with 17" wheels, too low for 2wd?

2002 5.9L 46re 9.25 originally mine had the 100k 7 year warranty. I got it Nov, 6 2001. I didn't even see another 3rd gen on the road for a month after I got it. Now Its time to hot rod at 191k. I am going to get a a posi, Auburn 542070. I have the 3.55 rear with 17" wheels thinking about getting 3.90 gears but I think It might be too low. But then again I want some 20' crager ss style chromes in the future to fill up the wheel well. Any body got any advice on this?

Wheel size has very little bearing to do with gears, it's over-all tire diameter that figures into your effective gear ratio. Although numerically higher gears will help offset the weight of larger wheels a bit.

I almost always recommend 4.56s for 3rd Gens, but that's because the 545rfe transmission has basically two overdrive gears, with a 46rh/re you don't have that taller gear, so I reserve 4.56s for tire sizes of 35" or more.

If I were going to do it, I'd go to 4.10s, same cost as 3.92s and the slight difference won't do much to highway RPMs but will get you up into the engines power band a bit quicker...
