Twist and pull. They can be stubborn

I'm looking at doing this myself but maybe im not understanding this right, if you disconnect the return line, either before the cooler or after the cooler, isnt all the fluid from the reservoir going to drain out and not even go through the pump? would it be better to clamp the line by the reservoir? and disconnect underneath it?
