Default ABS & Brake Light on, please help

[2006 1500 Sport 4x4 w5.7L]
Last week, I had to brake somewhat hard (didn't lock anything or even engage the abs) and shortly after the abs and brake lights came on. Stopped and checked the fluid level, but it was in the proper range. I shut her down and restarted her, but it didn't go off. Got into town, run in the store for 5 minutes and when I came out, the lights were off and stayed off till I got back on the highway. Ordered an ABS Speed Sensor the next day.

I looked at it the next day, added a tiny amount of fluid and drove it up and down the highway (1-2 miles each way)and couldn't get the lights to come back on.

Later though, after 3 miles (figures, right?) they came back on. Shut it off again in town and they didn't come back on again till I was 4 miles into the highway drive home.

I replaced the ABS speed sensor Tuesday, and got a chance to drive it into town tonight. Got 20 miles into town, made a couple stops, shut 'er off, then turned her back on after 10-15 minutes and after a couple minutes I got the ding ding damn lights back on again. This time I was sitting in park and not moving at all.

What else could be causing this? Going to drive me nuts.

You said you ordered an ABS speed sensor. Was that for the rear diff or the front wheel. What are you calling the speed sensor?

Just replacing a part in the ABS system doesnt always clear the light/code. You will have to get it read and cleared by a scanner that specifies reading and clearing ABS. Did you get it read to point to a speed sensor?

The one in the rear axle/differential.

The light doesn't stay on all the time, which is the frustrating part. Usually when it comes on, I don't get time to mess with it right away. My code reader isn't pulling any codes with the lights off, but I'm not sure if I can even get the ABS codes the way you normally do, like when the check engine light comes on. I read something about grounding a pin, but I'm not going to even attempt that without knowing for sure, as I might make things worse. lol - So no, I don't have any way of pulling the ABS codes for sure.

Our scanner at work will pull history codes.....can you scan it when the light goes on? Sometimes if the light comes on and goes off the code will stay until you shut it off. If it is only rear wheel abs check the wires to the sensor. They have to flex with the suspension, might want to check them over carefully. I have seen them break inside the isolation.... just have to feel them over good. Getting a code would be a good help to point you in the right direction though.

I don't think my code reader does ABS, I'll have to see if O'Reilly's has one or see if a mechanic I know can bring one home from work.

Default Same Issue

My 06 is having the same issue, and I only have rear ABS....I made sure that the vent tube was put back in its proper place next to the spare. Then the lights stopped coming on.....as much.

I had the same problem for a year. Brake light and abs light would randomly come and go. I replaced my rear sensor but the problem was still there. Finally tired of all the warning dings I waited till the lights came on and hooked up my superchip 3815 and pulled 2 dtc codes c1008 & c1009. Brake fluid low & high resistance. Apparently the master cylinder reservoir has a sensor that goes bad. I replaced the reservoir for about 60 bucks from the dealership and the problem has finally been solved. It took a while of driving around with my 3815 for the lights to come and finally pull a code but it was worth it. Hope this helps I know how annoying it can be.

Tried that with my scanguage, when the lights came on I still couldn't get codes. Thanks for another lead to look into though.
