Post Fuel pump issue

Hi, this is my first post here. I have a 2003 dodge with a 5.9 diesel. I believe the fuel pump went out. In my home work since I am not the original owner, there has been sort of a history with the fuel pump on them. Apparently there is or was a mechanical lift pump behind the filter that had a high failure rate so dodge redesigned a new one and put it in the tank. I'm pretty certain the pump is in the tank but the dealer tells me to look for the pump behind the filter. I did and there's one there but it appears to be an electrical one. The dealer is telling me the replacement pump is dependent if the pump is still there or not. So I call them back and all they want me to do is by the retrofit kit and won't answer my questions. No surprise there. I'm in nowhere Alaska so I am limited on resources.

So without tearing my truck apart to include the fuel tank, any ideas what I can do to find out exactly what I have before tearing apart and buying expensive parts that I may not need? Thanx
