I saw a 2006 model 1500 first-hand
I’ve been on vacation for the last week so I didn’t get a chance to post this until now, but the salesman who sold me my 2005 let me preview a new 2006 model 1500 about a week ago. They had it hidden around the back, and it seemed like they were keeping it out of view until more of the 2005 models had sold off the lot. These are just a few quick notes on what I saw, and it wasn’t as bad as I had expected.
First off, on the base ST model (which is what this one was) didn’t look nearly as ugly as in the pictures we have all seen. I am assuming the pictures are showing an SLT or Laramie. This one didn’t have any chrome.
The bumper doesn’t look nearly as bad as the pictures make it out to be. It was all black, without that ugly Nissan Titan-looking integrated chrome bar (again, probably because it was a base ST model). Even as a 4x2, it stood as tall as the 2005 4x4 because the new bumper is taller. As I understand it, all 2006 models will ride that high to give the bumper the extra ground clearance it needs. Not sure if the 4x4 models will ride even higher, or if they will all be the same.
The new “spoiler” is ugly, cheap, and looks absolutely hideous. It’s just a bolt-on piece of plastic that hopefully can be easily removed without leaving holes in the top of the tailgate.
The new middle dash console is remodeled, but looks no better or worse than the previous rendition. It does stick out further and look more pronounced, but I’m indifferent to it. This was a standard 2x4, but there’s a nice little panel on the front dash where the dial for 4x4 will go (about the same place as on late model Durangos). No more floor shifter on any model (Oh, come on!).

If dealers really want to sell more '05s, I suggest they move the '06 around front and put it in a prominant place, circling in red on the sticker what I've been told will be a price increase.
