Default GS Supercharger + locker?

Hi All,
I'm looking at putting the GS Supercharger on my 04 1500 RAM w/hemi. I was wondering if it is a good idea to put a locker or limited slip in the rear axle for this as well. I just keep thinking that ~390HP to the rear wheel + open diff = wheel spin for a long time.

I was wondering if what people who have installed the supercharger have in their truck think on this?

I'm thinking about putting in a Powertrax No-slip locker in. I've run one in my Jeep and so I know what it's like for handling. My big concern is whether or not it can handle the power. I don't want to put something in there that is going to explode the first time I really step on it.

Thanks!
Rough

I wouldn't do the powertrax with big power. They are rated for a lot but I blew one up in my Chevy with a very weak big block.

Why not go with a selectable locker? Air or electric. The reviews have been good and you lock em solid when you want to and are nice and comfy when you don't need it. I would strongly vote against a full time locker, that's just a bad idea on the street.

I'm glad you posted, I'm about to start my search for a supercharger. What made you choose this one for your truck?

Imho, limited-slip is a great idea on any vehicle, on ones with big power--whatever that means--it is essential! With a pickup being relatively light in the rear, it's yet more important, even before or without added power.

I do Land Speed racing and have been sideways with limited-slip at over 220mph... and have never failed to save it with limited-slip. Most don't understand that limited-slip is as important in regaining traction, once lost, as it is in avoiding losing traction in the first place (even limited-slip cannot overcome the laws of physics).

Don't leave home without it!

All the best.

Sideways at 220 sounds like high pucker-factor. yikes

I'm not a Power Trax fan. My buddy broke 2 lock-rites in his 318 equipped 73 w100. He's got a generic RV cam, headers, edelbrock performer intake and carb, and that's it.

I'd go with a LSD personally.

Osteodoc:

Depends on what you want to do... if simply for any reasonable street use I'd think the Mopar LSD should be fine, though the one in the new Ram is the first Mopar LSD I've had for a while.

If you are interested in any sort of competition, a built Ford 9" unit is the way to go. LOTS of ultra heavy duty parts, well sorted, the most gear ratios, and reasonably low friction loss--as bullet-proof as you'll find.

Do it! You'll not be disappointed.

Good luck

They don't make a selectable locker for the 9.25" chrysler rear end.
I have exhausted every avenue trying to find one. It's the power trax or nothing when it comes to lockers. I'm getting mine in a month or two, of course i don't have a super charger and i'm installing mine to help out off road.
Contrary to some others, i have heard good things about the "no slip", it's the "lock rite" that i have heard bad things about.

My two cents.

Hey Avanti, where would I go about getting the Mopar LSD. It is the only option I really wish I had on my truck. Cost?

Thanks everyone for their input. It turns out that I won't be putting in the supercharger right now. With gas prices the way they are I think that I'm just going to put in a new CAI, cowl induction hood, and cat back exhaust system. This way I can make the truck put out a little more power and make it my own. That's what I was really after in the first place. I do all my own work (built my own Jeep XJ 4x4 rig) and loved every minute of it.

When I do put a locker in, I think that I'll be going with the No-slip.

Later,
Rough

I'd suggest the salvage yard, first. Fortunately, it's usually the front of the vehicle that takes the hit and most of the rest is fine. There are a couple ways to proceed depending on where you are and what sort of yards are available. As to price, most "modern" yards simply charge a set percentage of new, though somewhat variable depending on demand and other specifics.

Many yards are networked and can get about anything, but again that increases price if the vehicle/part isn't on-hand--shipping, etc., of course.

Some small yards are more reasonable and if they have something it can be pretty cheap, especially if you take it off yourself and the yard isn't really set up and used to that.

Finally, if you are a known customer one can get better deals with some small yards (ask how I know); the other side of that is they have less choice on hand.

The bottom line is that differentials are not a big selling item. Usually, they never wear out and aren't replaced, hence are basically scrap when the day is done.

Many other related things but you've been around enough I suspect you know all them and probably all I've rambled on about here.

Happy hunting (if you decide to go this route)!
