Default Tow/Haul Button

2005 Ram 1500 4wd Hemi - I pull 6000 pound camper and normally use tow/haul mode because of hills. At 55mph if I am coming to a hill I push the button and it will downshift and run about 2400rpm and usually stay there. Occasionally, but not always, after I crest the hill and am no longer running hard, it will upshift down to about 1800rpm and the tow/haul light will still be on. I have to turn tow/haul off and back on again for the next hill. Is this normal? I never noticed it before because it seems as if I'm always on hills or a headwind.

Just leave it on, the truck knows what its doing. I noticed you have an 05, I have an 06 and my tow/haul does not disable my overdrive, it just stays in the lower gear longer to help the tranny on the hills.

If you are towing that much weight, you should push the button before you even put it in drive and leave it in tow mode until you get where you are going. It's not "hill climb" mode, it's tow mode. I find that, on inclines or when trying to keep up with faster traffic or higher speed limits, mine will downshift and has kind of a hard time shifting back up on it's own, so I feather the pedal a little bit until it shifts back up and then try to maintain from there.

As above, you just have to get used to feathering the pedal to maintain the right gear since only the 5th gets locked out with tow'haul. Another reason to leave it on is that it will gear down when going downhill.

Everyone already hit it. I tow a TT about 8k. I leave mine in Tow mode until I get where I am going. It does help when decending a hill, it will down shift, almost like engine braking. Keeps the trans from gear searching as well.

Agreed. I picked up a load of stone in the trailer this morning hit the tow/haul button and let the truck figure it out. It's a great feature to have and noticeably helps, at least in my experience.

Helps everything but the mpg, but thats the price of towing. Beats paying to rebuild a tranny.
