2004 4.7 oil issues....been searching....

2004 4.7 oil issues....been searching....
heya guys!
my buddy just bought an '04 ram with 4.7 and about 75K miles.
PO said that he had oil pump replaced and ever since then the gauge would bounce from normal to 0 and back. while following him home i heard rattling and ticking from behind him! had him pull over and we checked all that we could from a parking lot.
after readin and searching ive come up with a couple of ideas but need maybe some better direction.
1) bad sending unit, but engine is making noise so leads me to:
2) clogged pick up/screen on pump
also been reading that these engines are sludge machines......any truth to that or remedy? im thinking a quart of ATF and some filter swaps etc. would fix that.
