Default Help! Need 4.7L engine advice!!

I have a 2002 dodge ram 1500 with the 4.7L V8. I bought it used from a "friend" and it has been a nightmare but im too far into it to just get rid of it and loose my rear on selling it for nothing. It has 175,000 miles on it and as soon as it rolled over it started the over heating, dropping oil pressure, and knocking. Ive put parts on it that would normally solve the issue but it will not seemed to go away for more then a few days. I am to the point of putting a new engine in it, i have pulled the oil pan and found pieces of timing guide in the pan. I am at a fork in the road. What could i do to save the engine? new timing parts? or just go ahead and put a new engine in it? if so what engine would you reccomend? Jasper is the only one i really know of. I do not want to put a used engine in this truck because i really dont want to get back into the same problems. I am not sure what to do. I dont know which would be cheaper to do because i mean after the timing is replaced thats an upwards of 500 bucks just for the timing kit.

I really appreciate the help and advice! Thank you!

Over 17k a yr for 10 yrs...Hate to break it to ya but that engine is played...but there's hope! You got options a good used 4.7 or even better a 5.9 will drop in for less than a rebuild that you will be throwing $ at with no end in site...maybe your friend can give you a hand w/ the install he kinda owes you!

I gots to agree. 170k is a good bit on a gas engine and especially a V8. Find a replacement and put that one on the stand for a rebuild if you want a backup

What exactly would it take to put a 5.9 in it? I have thought about it but I've heard you had to cut fenders and firewall and trans won't bolt up.
