Problem
Just my opinion, but I've had great results with Seafoam. I also use MMO, but more in small engines or as a fogger. What did when I got my truck was two quick oil changes of Supertech high-milage oil, and half a can of Seafoam in the crank case. I ran it for around 500 miles each time. I have not taken my engine apart, so I can't say how effective it is. I've known lots of people to use a quart of transmission fluid.
Wingnuts,
It is highly recommend not to use oil additives.
I cannot recommend one oil over another and the intervals of when the oil should be changed have been discussed at very great lengths on many threads on this forum. I simply felt the need to comment on the oil additive because additives may break down any coatings or buildups inside oil pans, valve covers, or other parts of the engine. Clogged filters, pickup screens, or damage to gaskets and the like can result depending on what compounds are in the additives. If a pickup screen or filter becomes partially or completely clogged it can do a lot of damage in a short amount of time.
wingnut,
if you opt to switch to full synthetic, it can be done safely by doing several short interval drain cycles--say around 1500 miles+/-. Substitute 1 qt synthetic each time, for the dino oil. 1 the first time, 2 the second time, 3 the next and so on. each time the oil should come out near black as the sythetic dissolves the varnish and "stuff" off of all the components. I have 175K on mine and its still spotless inside, but its had amsoil the whole time at 10k miles drain intervals. No endorsement here. Royal Purple is vey good, mobil 1 is good, etc. During the switch over, you need to keep a very close eye on your oil condition, to judge the rate of cleanup. I suspect the mehanic is doing you a big favor by cleaning much of it up, but the synthetic will do an even better job, just don't let it happen too fast. Another guy here on the forum did this and it dumped all the nasty into his oil pan all at once and he lost oil pressure, fortunately, he did't damage anything, but the pan had to pulled, the pickup was totally plugged

Im guessing if these heads drop a valve at 50 miles the 12/12,000 should cover me.

I thought I read that conventional cleans up better than synthetic because conventional has to have more detergent in it?
