By steering box do you mean the rack and pinion?

On RockAuto the pars vary from $160-170 (excluding a core charge) for a full rack and pinon replacement, so thats a good place to start I suppose.

I see there are also seal kits available for around $30.

At the price of a full unit im not sure if it would be better to rebuild or replace. The quality of the aftermarket unit plus shipping effort/cost for the core would be something I would also consider. The shops labor quote would also be a large factor in that decision I would imagine.

From what I can tell its not a hard job to remove it. Not sure for a 4x4...dont think it should be more than 2-4 shop hours (@80/hr??) for a 2wd for a full replacement...depends on how deep they want to claw.

I just got a quote on this for my 2004 1500 4*4 yesterday at the local CarX, quoted $390 for a reman rack and $207 labor, throw in a alignment and tax and you'd be looking at $700. Of course the same place quoted me $300 for rear pads and rotors (needed to pass inspection) so I promptly went to Oreilly and bought Bosch rotors and ceramics, under $200 in parts and much better than the junk parts they would have used.

had it fixed yesterday .......... plus a new serp belt and two small hose replacements that were causing vapor leaks and keeping the CEL on ...... all better for $957.30 .............

outside of oil changes, tire rotations, inspections, emissions, and a couple of light bulb replacements this is the first non routine maintenance I've done on my Ram since it was new ............. I bought it new on Sept. 19, 2003 and it has 146,169 miles on it

overall I've been very happy with my Dodge and would buy another tomorrow if this one left me roadside and helpless ............

Awesome, congrats.

Just curious, did they rebuild your unit or put in a whole re manufactured unit?
