Default 03 Ram 1500 5.7 water pump problems.

Hi and help.......FAST

I just returned from a short trip to the local store and when I got back, I spotted steam and water dripping from under the hood on my 03 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 4x4 Hemi. 130000K miles on her.
On inspection, it looks like the leak is coming somewhere, from the front of the water pump housing and running down onto the crank pulley??
Any ideas if that is normal when a water pump blows??
There isn't any really bad sounds coming from the truck like grumbling or squeling from the pump area. Just normal engine sounds.
My temp gauge didn't spike and the engine wasn't cooked or overheated as I caught this problem early.
Any pointer on this problem and how to change this sucker please.
Cheers for the help.
Al.

There should be a weep hole on the waterpump, if its leaking from there its likely clogged or bad. Removal and install isnt terrible, especially if you have the efan mod. Youve gotta take the clutch fan and shroud off to get to the pulley. Once youve drained the rad and disconnected the hoses that you need to to remove the shroud, fan and pump, just take it off. I believe you can get new pumps with and without pulleys, so keep that in mind. Little rtv on the back amd reinstall everything. Goodluck.

Hi ewing111 and thanks for the quick reply.
Do you or anyone else who's reading this thread know, if the original pulley comes off the water pump so I can install it on the new pump if it doesn't have it fitted?
I've asked my supplier if the new one come with a new pulley, but he hasn't got back to me yet.
Don't forget I'm from the UK and he's getting spares from either Holland or Belgium.
So it's a bit complicated lol.
Cheers for the help guys.

Al, my waterpump died at 130000 also. Not too hard to change yourself because there is a lot of room to work under there. New pump does not come with a pulley or tensioner. Only tricky parts: stabilizing the fan to loosen the nut, and be sure to number/mark the bolts as you take them out of the waterpump. There's probably 12 bolts to remove and all have same size head but are different lengths.

WOW 12 bolts for that thing??
I'll take note of your tip bud and make notes as I go.
There's not much in the manuals about swapping it out??
I've ordered up a new serpentine belt, two idler pulleys and the tension pulley, to do the whole job whilst doing the pump.
A bit more preventative maintenance and peace of mind.
Cheers.

Good idea doing the belt and other pulleys/tensioner, might as well since you have to take it all apart anyway. The original pulley should come off, just be careful not to bugger it up so you can reuse it.

Yeah.... My new pumps coming with a new gasket.
Hopefully this job will go sweet, as Hemi's my daily driver.

I just told him 12 bolts so he wouldn't be discouraged. The gasket is small challenge itself. I used RTV sealant at a few corners inside of the water pump gasket groove to hold it tight to the pump.

The new gasket style was already fitted into mine. I used no sealent and havent had any problems. I think its between 14-17 bolts

And if you bought a new pump it better come with a new gasket or id send it back lol
