Default 2002 5.9

Hey Guys/Gals,

Going to look at a 2002 Ram 4x4 w/ the 5.9 tomorrow. Has roughly 96k miles on it.
Any recomendations on what I should look for/at? Any Pros/cons to these trucks i should know about from first hand owners?

Thanks for any/all replies.

Bryan

Head over to the second gen section and ask away.. they are better suited for conversations about the magnum engines.. no.e is an 02 5.9.. its more like a second gen than a third..

No real problems other than Death Flash to fix the plenum gasket problem

Other than that the 5.9 will run forever, I have same truck and love everything about it

The only bad things I've ever heard about the 5.9s is MPG and power (also the plenum gasket). But like it was said. Other than that with proper maintenance they will run forever

There's a lot of info on it floating around. It's PCM programming that Dodge used in an attempt to reduce pinging, but it robbed power. It's fixable with a tuner (SCT canned tune is preferred here for the 5.9L).

So a few hundred bucks, and the Death Flash will be no more. Just make sure the plenum is repaired before you tune it.

See if you can get any history on the trans, like if its been serviced at all. Check the fluid too. Bought a 02 ram with the 360 and it had 99k on it.. 9 days later I lost reverse. 2500 dollars later it's up and running again.
