I just purchase new ones. Usually when they are that dirty its time for a replacement.

They aren't that expensive from what I remember.

They run around $20-$25 for my truck. Just wanted to try to clean it first.

Go ahead and try to clean it, it will work for some.
When you PCV valve is out does it move freely? If so its good forsure and a wipe down wouldnt hurt.
If it dosent move and you clean it then it does move then you saved your self some money

I clean mine 'bout once a year, 'cause they're WAY TOO EXPENSIVE to just pitch. I did finally replace the one in my Ram at ~116K. I just cleaned the one in the Chrysler for the second or third time.
