Oil pan removal
Have a 4x4 2002 Dodge Ram with 4.7L. Is it necessary to have to lift the engine to get the oil pan off? The manual I have says it is but from looking underneath it looks as thought he oil pan should just drop down.
The service manual from Chrysler also says that, although it doesn't say how far you must lift it. It simply states, "just enough to remove the pan". Not sure if that the manual you have or not.
Who has actually removed the pan without raising the engine? I am wanting to replace the pan this weekend but have no means to lift the engine and do not want to be stuck with the pan unsealed (even though it is leaking like a sieve) and then have to put it back on. The manual I have says lift the pan also but I thought I heard of people saying that they have done it without lifting the engine. Anybody? And if so, what sort of obstacles do you run into be not lifting the engine?
Thanks in advance

i doubt you'll have to lift the engine very much if any. if you do need too im sure you can just undo the motor mounts and jack up the engine without having to undo anything else. i had to to that with my 5.9L magnum a few years ago and i managed to jack it up about 6 inches and had no problems once i dropped it back in.

I just had the engine rebuilt and somebody in their the shop actually beat on the oil pan flange to try to get it to stop leaking. So now the lip that use to be on the sealing flange is all beat to hell along the rear corners and leaks like a sieve.

I was able to get the pan off my 2005 but it was a real PITA. All you have to do is unbolt the crossmember, unbolt the oil pan, reach up into the pan toward the front of the motor to unbolt the oil pump, then work it out with what space you have.
