What causes the "ticking"/Looking to fix mine.
I've got a ticking going on in my engine and I'm looking at getting the parts to fix it up, but I'm not sure which parts cause this particular problem.
Mine isn't just happening on startup, it happens all the time and is relative to RPM. I've read a bit about it and it seems the 4.7L engines suffer from this problem commonly.
I'm hearing possibly two noises though, the ticking that is noticeably loud at all RPM ranges, but is kind of intermittent at idle, and then there what sounds like more of a quiet knocking noise that I can only hear at idle because it's so quiet.
So to sum it all up, Do I need to purchase/replace the lifters to cure the ticking noise? And how can I diagnose this "knocking" noise I hear? is it possible that it's just another lifter but with less of a problem?
Here is a video I got today....not that the video is useful, but the sound is

one way to narrow it down is crawl up in the enine bay with a long hanled flathead and put the bit end on a valve cover annd the other to your ear and move it around the valve cover to see if one lifter is ticking louder tha the other, repeat on the other side. isnt scientific, but ive figured out a many lifter issues using this method. also try running a lil thicker oil or diesel oil as it has stuff in it that gasolone oils dont.

The passenger side was quiet, except that I could hear the noise as if it were "far away"
I don't hear much of anything from the oil pan.
if you can, put it on the side of the head itself and move from front to back, and if you have to, ask somebody to get inside and rev it up to about a grand to make the sound more distinquised. If its just intermitent at idle and always there when the engine is above idle, it soulds like somewhere isnt as getting as much oil as it should. have you looked around at something that could be vibrating or is it so obvious that you know its coming from the direction of the motor? just throwin that out there.
I'd start with the cheaper, less intrusive possible fixes first before going after the valves. Try doing each of these in this order until the noise goes away. Do not do more than one of the additives at a time. Use one, then let it run its cycle and if it does not work, move on to the next.
1. Sea foam
2. Lucas upper cylinder lubricant
3. Lucas Oil Stabilizer
4. Check EGR valve
5. Check exhaust manifold bolts
6. Check valves
7. Check pistons

Intermittent.....this is basically what it sounds like...
tick tick tick tick tick (silence) tick tick (silence) tick (silence) tick tick tick tick (silence) (silence) tick tick .....
with the sounds happening once or twice per second.
Also, change the oil if it still has the seafoam in it. Its job is to dislodge and dissolve carbon so even if it did not fix the tick, it still muddied up your oil and should therefore be changed. The fuel tank and lines will burn it off but the crankcase will hold it.

I'm not going to say it's not a manifold bolt, but I do have my doubts about that. The sound just doesn't seem to be emanating from the exhaust manifolds.
