Default front drive axles

06 Ram 1500 4x4 Quad Cab, Anyone know how much up and down play is acceptable on the front drive axle inboard CV joints? I assume none but both my shafts have almost 1 inch of play. No clunking noises but there is a low howling noise when driving.

Sounds like the hub bearing is going bad. The howl will get louder, may even start making a grinding noise as it gets worse. You should replace them both as soon as you can.

The play is at the inboard cv joint. There is no movement at the outboard hub cv joint so I'm not sure why it might be the hub bearings.

just did the diff oil and it was fine. The shaft going into the diff is secure, the cv has all the play in it. Both shafts have almost the same amount of play in the inboard cv joints which I thought was a bit strange so thats why I wondered how much play is acceptable. Again I assume no play should be in the cv joints but I've been wrong before. lol
