Default noisy rear diff

I towed the trailer and Jeep across the country (TX to SD) last week, and returned yesterday. The Hemi power was wonderful, in fact you couldn't tell there was anything behind us, except when we stopped to fill up with gas (!!!).

But half way there the rear diff started to whine, and things got louder as we went further. The mechanic in Custer South Dakota said dodge limited slips have a habit of whining, and told me to throw in some friction modifier. I did that, and it lessened the noise somewhat, but it's still louder than I believe it should be if all was ok inside there.

By the time we had crossed the country again, (NE and KS have the highest gas prices at $3.25 / gallon regular) I developed a new noise. Now when I take my foot off the gas and am coasting, the noise changes to more of a ratcheting/clicking noise, instead of the whine when I'm on the gas.

I suppose the limited slip is shot, but wondered if anyone has had this problem and might have some input.

thanks

dave

Sounds like a loose pinion.

Time for a trip to the dealer. Sounds like it's time for a diff rebuild.

My new 2005 has the same noise but only after running it down the interstate you can notice a whining when you start out from a stop sign. I have the limited slip rear end also I was begining to think it might be a U joint but yours sounds like a better clue the truck only has 1500 miles on it.

Isn't it still under warranty?

Good question. Why not let the stealership do the work. You can let your guy do the work and I think if he is ASE certified he can get reimbursed by DC. Don't quote me on that though.
