Default 87 or 89 octane?

With all the talk of fuel mileage and the cost of gasoline I have one question. I have a 2005 Ram QC SLT 4x4 with the Hemi. I have only used Mobil 87 octane, unless on a trip and no Mobil in site, and was wondering if anyone has had any problems. I was told the owners manual recommends 89 and I've heard some people get better mileage with 89. I'm not concerned with the fuel economy as much as the engine health. My Ram has about 8500 miles on it and it's running like a champ. I've not heard any "gas knocks" or anything else. The truck is completely stock for the moment. Thanks in advance for any opinions or advice.

Simple, you want the best performance, put in what is called for.

What is one grade better going to cost per fill-up, a couple dollars, or slightly more? Why buy a hemi and skimp now for so little savings?

All the best.

I agree, follow the owner's manual. The 87 octane will start causing timing problems eventually.

I'm in the middle of checking this out. I have been using 87 octane since day one. The last couple of tanks I have put in 89 and have been getting better mileage. I figure 3 fill ups of around 3/4 of a tank will give me all 89 octane. I am the biggest doubter of propaganda related to intakes, exhaust, octane.... giving you better performance. But this seems to have bumped my mpg up almost 2.

I can tell you I ALWAYS get better milage with Shell gas. It is true what they say that they have better gas. I compared this several times to other brands over a period of time.

Has anyone noticed a difference with the Chevron since it has some techron additive that its suposed to make it run cleaner?
Its a little of topic but just wanted to find out. Going to get a gas card soon to save .05 per gallon, what brand do you guys recommend, Thanks.

I agree with HemiBuell. Of all of the gasolines that I have used, I have found that on average, Shell gas DOES perform best in terms of gas mileage. This is on ALL vehicles I have ever tried to pay attention to gas, and they all had different engines.

With the current gas prices I have cut mine down to 87, runs just fine. I can't tell any difference.

I run 89 in mine. It only cost little over 2 dollars more. I get 17 MPG average. That is driving half and half. Once you start adding performance items onto your truck like manifold, CAI and exhaust you are going to want 89 if not you will be able to tell a big diffrence.

I run 87 with no problems. I doubt DC would list it in the owners manual as an acceptable octane rating if it was going to ever hurt anything. You won't feel any noticable performance gains running 89, and I didn't notice any difference in MPG in the few tanks I've run.

I would definatley recommend the 89 octane. Just a suggestion to anyone, I have a Citi Dividend Master Card that gives you a 5% rebate at all gas stations, supermarkets, and drug stores. I use it to purchase gas only and pay it off every month. This has an avantage over gas cards, you can use it at any gas station. So you can buy Shell VPower gas or chevron with techron, depending on availablitliy, and you dont lose the discount. It is a substantial discount. Example. If gas is 3 dollars a gallon, it will only cost you 2.85 per gallon. Over time if you bought 100 gallons of fuel. You would save 15 dollars. My wife and I both use the card for gas purchases.
