Default Updating new cortex

I'm planning on ordering a cortex for my 04 ram in the next day or so I was wondering are these plug and play out of the box or do u need to update them before u use them? Truck is 5.7 hemi flowmaster duals, volant intake. Reason I'm asking is I just melted the mother board on laptop and currently using iPad and won't be able to update for a few days. Thanks for any info

Personally I wouldn't get a cortex. Since you have an 04 you would benefit more from a Flashpaq

Depending on how long your Tuner was sitting on a shelf somewhere there may be an update for the tuner but, you can use the tune thats on it until your PC situation is fixed.

There's a better than 50/50 chance it will need to be updated, as well as a sensor update that has to happen prior to the tune load. If you buy it from a local dealer, they may be able to help you out as far as the updates go. As far as the other tuners go , I really don't know. I own an earlier edition Diablo and like it.

Tunes are the same between the cortex and the 3865 flashpaq. The cortex is one unit for all dodge/chrysler, all engines where the flashpaq isn't as universal. The 3865 works for a handful of dodge/chrysler vehicles, most of the non-jeep vehicles they stuck the hemi in. The flashpaq is not for diesel ram's either, where the cortex will tune a dodge diesel.

Will the performance tunes that come with either programmer reduce TQM? I'm sure flashpaq won't so the 30 I saved over buying cortex ill spend in downloading trans tune? Right? Sorry for all questions but superchips is closed till 2nd

Some guys looking for high Automatic Transmission control have used the Superchips I Think, and rave about its improvements.

Pretty sure you have to buy the trans tune regardless, and it's per vehicle, the cortex only offers more vehicle support, so you can tune your Ram HD diesel, and remove it and tune your Hemi challenger for the weekend.

Once you tune the truck and the VIN is stored in the programmer, you come back in and plug the tuner into the PC and it will verify your vehicle is supported, and then the trans tune is available for purchase through the software.

I didn't buy the trans tune, and found the tuned transmission much better than stock, I didn't have the desire to customize beyond that for now. I'm running the 3865.
