If its a 1500 model the 4x4 doesn't have to be engaged for the front cvs to still be turning and make noise on full lock.

ya, she's got character alright.....

I don't think it was me doing anything to my trans?! if I do, it'll be when I'm employed and probably just a shift-kit, they're fairly cheap.

Almost sounds like solenoid chatter from the shifter locking solenoid in the column area.
