Default Oil changes

I was curious if you all go back to the dealer to get the oil changed, go to the 10 minute type place, or do it yourselves?

I used up my free oil changes from the dealer when i purchased my truck. Now I do it myself, it's so easy to get under it I don't have any excuses.

I think it really depends on two things.... money and time....

I used synthetic oils in both my trucks, and once I reach my next oil change, will be switching the car over to synthetic. Synthetic oils arent cheap, and buying it at autozone or napa can be just as expensive as paying to get it done. I was averaging about $28-30 to pay Wal-Mart to do my oil. It was costing me like $24 to do it myself. I personally dont mind paying someone else to do it. $4.00 in savings really isnt a whole lot, and considering I dont have to worry about making time to do it or worry about disposing of oil and such....it's an easy call.

That said, it's good to be able to change your oil and I am glad I can do it. Honestly though, I think it just depends on personal preference here..... I do a lot of shopping so its easy for me to just drop off my car while I shop.

Costs me just $11.88 to get my oil changed at Goodyear. Just sign up for their membership.

It costs me about $20 to do my own oil change. I buy a 5 qt bulk and 2 quart singles at Wally World. I usually get either a Fram Tough Gard filter (the only one they make worth a damn) or a purolator from down the street. As for oil, the Castrol Syntec blend usually costs me about $1-2 more than the Castrol GTX depending on current price. It only cost me about $1 more last time because the 5qt bulk container was the same as the regular Castrol GTX. I have grown up using the Castrol line and unless it is synthetic (I use Mobil 1) I buy Castrol.

Oh yeah, and I have the piece of mind that it was done right the first time. I also look for leaks and what not while I'm under there.

Do my own. Full synthetic and mobile 1 filter, around $45. Run it for 5k miles, so compared to conventional at 3k, about the same price with less changes.

Same here - Gives me a little longer to waddle around before I think about having to change it.

DO YOU MEAN I CAN GET SOMEONE ELSE TO CHANGE MY OIL!!!!!! I guess I don't remember 1 time in 27 years of driving that I've had someone else change my oil. Less time consuming to just do it myself.

i let the dealer handle it, with as strict as DCX has been getting on warranty issues, i let the dealer handle it and that way if anything goes wrong, dealer can look back or i can look in my records and see all the services that have been performed, just my opinion i guess, but i change my own oil on all of my other vehicles, love gettin down and gettin dirty.

I tend to not trust the 10 minute shops. I had an Accord that you could not remove the filter without getting oil on the exhaust pipe, so the first few miles home, you always smelled the oil burning off. Last time I went to Jiffy Lube on the way home, no smell. I got home, checked the oil--black. Also it was evident they just wiped off the filter.

I went back to the store whereupon the manager proceeded to tell me how that was completely normal for oil to turn that black in 2 miles, and besides, he had the sheet where the moron signed off that he changed it. Like I say, last time there.

95% of the time I do it myself with Mobil 1. In winter or crappy weather, I have had decent luck at Walmart since I stand there and watch them dump in the oil.
