Default How is the efan mod with towing?

I've been wanting to do this mod for awhile. I don't drive the truck everyday so around town I'm concerned about the mod, but when I do use it I'm on the highway usually hauling a trailer into the mountains.
I've been reading alot and chambers setup looks like the route I need to go. Is running it on high the way to go with towing?

Generally from what I understand about efans is that they are meant for in town driving. That's when they are on and cooling the engine without the parasitic loss to the drivetrain. That's where you'll see the mpg gains from it. On the highway, you're doing 60-70 mph so there is more then enough air to cool the engine so the fan shuts down. As for towing idk if it would run automatically on the highway or if you'd have to manually turn it on to get more engine cooling

If you're concerned about temps while towing I would look into a 1 ton tranny cooler to keep the trans from overheating

08hemi nailed it.

Depends on how you have it wired though. Running through an adjustable thermostat is the way to go for towing. That way if it doesn't cool how you like you can lower the temperature at which the fans engage. Mine doesn't even run on the interstate towing a 21' blazer.

I just found a 2 speed Hayden controller (3654). This should work both speeds on the taurus fan right? I've actually forgotten what tstat I have.

Nevermind Hayden, go with Flex-a-lite kit #183. Im not sure if it goes on an 04 or not, but should be a close fit. I was towing thru the rockies with a double axel trailer last month, The fan kept up just fine.

As for the fan being for intown only. In a sence yes, and another not. The fan turns on in the city to keep you cool in stop and go. On the highway, usually it doesn't even turn on. Unless your towing the vehicles max, and don't have the tranny cooler, driving uphill at 100 degree plus. I don't see why the efan wouldn't work for you.

the flex a lite is a 18amp single fan, doing approx. 3300cfm. The kit comes with a temp controller, you can buy addition parts, like manual on or off switches. The Only negative with the kit and the temperature probe needs to be stuck thru your rad at the top hot side. Other then that, its been perfect for me, well worth twice its price.

Side note: Has anyone ever had to buy a replacement fan?? after the 1st one died or burnt out??

I've towed my trailer through downtown traffic on a hot summer day with no issues at all. The fan doesn't run all the time even under those conditions. The fan never runs on the highway, only in traffic. On the highway, there is always more air volume through the radiator than the fan could ever produce.

Thanks Mitch, I looked into that flex a lite. Direct bolt in....sounds like it's well worth the price. Thanks

the flex a lite 183 is what I run, it is a direct bolt in, high quality kit. Ive been very happy with it and agree its worth the price over a junkyard taurus fan. I have mine set up with the adjustable thermostat and the manual override switch. The override switch has proven effective at the drag strip for letting the truck cool down between runs.
