Default Replacement trailer plug

Hi all

I have an '08 RAM 1500 and would like to replace the seven contact trailer plug. Problem is, the connector on the truck is an eight pin rectangular type but I can't find any new plugs with that type of connection.

Any ideas? The old connector's contacts are very corroded and this is causing my trailer lights to not function properly.

All the newer types of plugs have the right number of contacts to connect to the trailer but the connection that goes to truck is circular and I'm not it will work.

Here is the new connector

They make contact cleaners. Then use an electric grease to keep them from corroding.

Thanks. I tried contact cleaner but it didn't seem to fix my trouble. I will try using a wire brush with cleaner on it to clean the corrosion off.

Naval jelly will work well too. Make sure you rise it really good.

I tried cleaning the contacts on the truck plug with a wire brush and contact cleaner, but no difference. I don't have right turn signal or right brake light on the trailer. the bulb on the right side of the trailer is good because it comes on when I turn on the truck lights.

Anyone tell me how the connector in the pics comes apart?

Change trailer bulb first just to be sure...one of the filaments could be burnt out.
(If you don't have LEDS)

there are actually 2 filaments in a light bulb for a trailer.1 is running light the other is stop/blinker. Just because the stop/blinker light doesn't work and the running lights do doesn't mean that the bulb is good. Change the bulb with a new one to see if it works. If not, Use a test light at the socket on the trailer and see if your getting power to the socket. if you are and the bulb still doesn't work, the contacts are probably to corrode to make a good contact with the bulb and you'll have to change out the socket(whole light). If that's the case I'd buy some l.e.d trailer lights and you won't have to worry about trailer bulbs for a long while

Thanks. The replacement bulb did the trick. I tried replying via my smartphone, guess it didn't make it thru!

I was unaware of the fact that the bulb has two filaments.

Thanks again for your tip and explanation!
