Default Heater core replacement

I have an 06 ram 1500. Im going to attempt to replace my heater core. I was reading in the haynes manual that you have to get the ac discharged. My question is where and how is this connected to the heater core that I need it discharged. Or is it just in the way to get at the core.

You should be able to do it without discharging the A/C... there are some very detailed how-to's out there.

2003 isn't too much different from yours. should be almost the same from 2002-2008...
