Default Shocks or Struts? WHat is it?

Hey all,

One more front end question for my 2004 Dodge RAM 2500 5.9L Cummins. I have been reading online and haven't found anything definitive on this. I am going to be doing the ball joints and while I am in there, I am going to be doing the shocks/struts...

So, my question is, what is in there on this truck? It looks to be like a shock looking type thing but I think in the last article I read, it said it was a "strut and spring" setup. Whatever this is....

So, I am wondering what is in there and if any of you could suggest a decent replacement brand of the shock/strut in there, that would be great!

Thanks in advance!

Dodge didn't move to struts until like 09 or so.
So your truck has shock front and rear.

Yup, Check out rancho 9000's they're adjustable.

Ps----spray the lower bolts for the shock mount on the front shocks, they can be a PIA

Can't stress this enough. Spray them a couple times a day or two before you do the work.

Yepper, I have been reading all along the way to spray pretty much everything with PB Blaster like days before this work. This I will not miss...

So, I checked again today and on my 2004 Dodge RAM 2500 5.9L Diesel, there is one Spring and one shock or strut. I keep getting told its a strut. Anybody know definitively for this?

How about what's on the rear of the vehicle?

My NAPA guy may know this too...

Thanks in advance!

If you have an upper control arm then you have a shock. It is a coil over shock in our trucks, but a shock nonetheless. A strut actually mounts to the body/frame of a unibody car and usually pivots when you turn (mcpherson design - more common).

UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH,No

The shock sits inside the spring, it does NOT mount to the spring. If the spring is mounted directly to the top of the entire shock assembly, then its a strut.

If you are told you have struts on a 2500, run---don't look back, or better yet, look up the parts at rockauto.com
