first thing that happened was the vehicle starting kind of chugging and shaking while driving with a little bit of a loss of power, i took the truck to auto zone and they read the error code p0305 which was misfire in cylinder 5. i replaced all the spark plugs and figured out that there is a built in code reader and it is giving me a new code p0300 (random misfire) the shaking has gone away but it seems to be shifting really late and the mpg display has gone from a 13.5 avg to 7.5 avg. I'm not really sure what else to do since i don't have much money to just replace stuff until its fixed. hoping someone has had similar experiences and can help me get this fixed! also it has rained a lot here lately and i had drove through a few streets that had about 1-2 feet of water. not sure if that affects anything

Could be the cam sensor. My understanding is that is a critical piece to the timing for the coil packs. Plus a quality code reader can help you narrow the misfires down.

 

if that sensor is bad wouldn't there be a stumble in the engine and shaking?

 

Mine has almost the same problem and after months of trying to diagnose it myself, I took it to the dealer. They said it was because the plugs I put in weren't stock plugs.
They threw in new plugs and it was like night and day.

 

Replaced the plugs that came with the truck with what auto zone recommended changed the cam sensor and the problem is still there although no code are being displayed.. Still trying to figure this out

 

Do me a favor and swap the coil from #5 to another cylinder and see if that new cylinder begins to miss. You could be dealing with one or more bad coils. Moisture especially will cause them to act up as the water provides a nice path to ground through any cracks in the coil housing.

 

I can give that a shot (and holy damn the coils are spendy, 35$ for one!)but as of right now im not getting the mil or any codes. The rattle is gone and it seems that it wants to linger in first and second gear for a little longer than usual. Also starting to think it may have been the gas i bought. Im going to let it get really low and make sure i get the good stuff in and see if that helps any.

 

I had the same kind of problem last week. I was getting a p0303( misfire cly #3 code) and it was running like crap,I swapped the #3 coil and plug with the #4 coil/plug and cleared the code .It took about a day for the code p0304 to come up. I bought a new plug and coil and that fixed it. I'm willing to bet if you were to change the coil that would be the end of it
