help with tire size please
Hey everybody, im new to this site. I joined because i love trucks and am in need of some help. I have a 2003 ram 1500 2wd that currently has 265/70/17 tires on it. Im getting a 1.5 in leveling kit and 285/70/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers on it next monday. I am also keeping the stock 17x7 wheels.
My question is, will the 285s fit on the stock wheel ok. The 4x4 shop that is doing it said they will fit fine. Im not worried about clearance in the wheel well, just worried that the 285 will be too wide for the stock 7 inch wide wheel. Does anyone know if it will be ok or does anyone have 285s of the stock 7 inch wide wheel. Thanks in advance for any answers!

Normally 265 are 17x8 wheels. A 245 tire would normally be on 17x7 wheel. You are going quite wide for that size wheel. If you look at the specs 275 is the widest you can find for 17x7 wheel. The ideal size would be 17x8.5.
Awesome! I think I will get the DC 2 with the same specs. Its the only one with a 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern.

Rim size is designated by the tire manufacturer as all are slightly different depending on how they measure the tires since there is no standard.
Generally, a 285 requires a MINimun rim width of 8" and a 265 requires minimum of 7" so your already at your max with your current set-up.
The problem with putting too wide of a tire on a narrower wheel is that the center of the tire will wear out fast. This means you have less traction because of less surface contact. It also means the tire will roll more in the corners and you'll wear out the outer edges. If you think you can deflate the tires.wrong. you'll wear the outer edges and not the center.
Just go to tirerack and pick a tire in your size. They give rim requirements based on manufacturer.
