Default High Rpms' when cold

I have an 03 2500 with a 5.7 Hemi that runs high rpm's when cold. Once the engine temp gets to normal the rpm's go back to normal. Can someone tell me if this is normal?

What do you consider "high rpm's"

Normal should be about 600 rpm.

Mine turns around 1,200 rpm for half a minute or so. It's to heat the cats up. It slows down gradually 'til it's at normal idle.

Standard warm up procedure. The colder it is, the longer the high idle will be on. Keep that block heater plugged it, and she will love you for it.

Actually I am talking about when I drive it when cold. At 60 mph when cold the RPM's are at about 2400 until the engine temp gets to normal range then it drops to about 16-1700. This happens if I let it warm for a couple of minutes or just start and get on the road. Thanks for any information you guys can provide.

The tranny won't go into over drive until it's at operating temperature.

I noticed mine doing the same thing. On a cold start mine will idle at 1,000 rpm's but when it's at normal operating temperature it's 600 rpm's. I think it's just the cold weather.

This is why.

You are not in Over-Drive because the transmission fluid is too thick to provide optimal flow to the OD gear(s) which means it has to warm up.

The higher idle is to assist the truck at warming up faster.... In a warm-up cycle the PCM will actually adjust the Idle RPM depending on Coolant Temperature, as well as run off of the IAT sensor and ignore the O2 Sensors (until they are warm) which allows for a "safe" fuel and timing map to run the truck until all the sensors and fluids are at optimal temps.

So what you are all experiencing is completely normal.
