Default Little help-Engine noise

My brother called me about his truck.
2002 1500 Quad, 4.7L, 120,000mi

He said its making a ticking noise. And had a P0306 code CEL on constant. I've heard the startup noise before and was not concerned knowing its just the lifters pressurizing.
He said its a little louder, like playing cards in spokes.

I went over and listened. He had it good and warmed up, and the noise sounded like exhaust mani leak (more puff puff or pst pst noise than tick tick) to me. He goosed the throttle and it sounded worse like a rod knock or something serious. I turned off, reset code restarted and the noise disappeared. Drove around the block it sounded fine. Checked oil while I was at it and it was probably at least 1/2 qt overfilled, if not 1qt.

anyone recall this disappearing/reappearing noise on the 4.7? He just got the truck a month or two ago, and I hope its not serious like a Con Rod, or Valve seat. I don't want him to drive it unless I can look it over again.
I was going to change oil (looked good and honey colored, no smell though)
Things I have found on the forums that I may want to look into.
- Exhaust manifold leak, broken bolts
- Popped rocker arm

Anything else, or advice?
Thanks, Eric

It could very well be a popped off rocker arm. Pull the rocker cover and find out.

Simple enough to put them back on, but it'll keep happening unless you change the lifters(followers) or replace them with solid.

thanks prismatic,

I'm thinking its not the rocker (unless it can pop itself back on) because the sound was there, then went away, then came back.
going to test injector (resistance), Coil (swapping) and look at plug. Along with an oil change.
Pulling the valve cover after that to see what it looks like in there.

I'll let you know how it works out
