Default Remote Start question from Newbie

I have a 3rd gen Ram. 2007 Quad Cab Hemi.

Here is my problem. I would like to add a basic remote start. I am very familiar with the complexity of wiring and would like to do this myself. I have read wonderful things about the Xtreme DBALL. However, I dont think it will work for me. My factory keyfobs are ****. I posted problems months ago about the range on my factory keyfobs. I literally have to be at the door for my keyfob to lock/unlock doors. NO range at all. I have replaced batteries 3 times and have no idea why they will not work.

I would like to add remote start solution and get a new keyfob that will let me lock/unlock my doors again finally.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I was looking at the Bulldog RS1100 as a basic system under $100 that I could install myself, but my key question is can I use a standard key with bypass module or will this add another fob to my factory fob?

All i want to do essentially is to get a new key, plain old dodge key without buttons, and have an aftermarket remote start/keyless entry. Is that too hard?

Bump...

Pretty sure it's impossible [to get a simple key w/ no buttons] b/c you have an immobilizer.... my suggestion is to go with a Viper system, they are easy to install and reliable...

Battery life does suck on the 2-way systems, but they have .5-1 mile range depending on model you get.

Also be prepared to get an extra programmed key made if you don't already have one, as you will need to put in an immobilizer bypass in order for the R/S system to work without triggering the OEM security system...

I suggest the 556UW as it uses the key physically, so it will never lose programming, where as the programmable units tend to fail and/or lose programming if your battery dies, or you change the battery... which leaves you effin stranded.

That is my suggestion as a former Installer with MECP Certifications....

I can't remember if the Dodge Ram also needs a 2nd relay... you'll have get the wiring diagram for the R/S install and see if you have a second starter wire... I'm pretty sure you wont need it but you never know...

Good luck.

I would suggest fixing the problem of keyfob range before tossing a remote start in. New OEM fobs are around $100 but if you check emay they are half that, as long as your dealership will program them, you are good. I've used 2 ebay keys no issues for 2 years.

BTW, I have the Xtreme DBALL (set up to 3x lock) and love it.

I'm curious as well and heard on another site that the factory set up somehow has a much larger range for starting like 300' or something crazy. How is this possible?

I can confirm my range is about 300'... but that's unobstructed line of sight... but Still... I can start it from inside my house without a problem. so I'd say there's something else going on.

If you live near High Voltage Power Lines or a power substation that can significantly decrease the range of any RF Transmitter type device...

Smart Start is a Viper Product... Dball is something else... I doubt they can be combined...

Pretty sure D-ball and Viper are both a Directed Electronics product. I was just curious if anyone ever added the smart start feature to a dball set up. Check out this link

Being owned by the same company doesn't mean anything... they are still very different subsets of the company... I just confirmed that the Smart Start only works with the following VIPER Brand Systems:

5906, 5904, 5806, 5706, 5704, 5606, 5204, 5104, 4806, 4706, 4704, 4606, 4205, 4204, 4203, 4105, 4104, 4103.

Good luck trying though...
