check engine: cylinder misfire
I started having problems with my 2006 dodge ram 1500. Check engine light turned on and my truck would have....a hick-up....if i can call it that. Codes p0302 would turn on and also other codes advising that there was multiple cylinder misfires. I changed spark plugs and coils...still does it. 2 weeks later, spark plugs were messed up. Spark plugs were changed again and oxygen sensors too, including plugs. Well, check engine light turned on again still giving me the p0302 and c1002. Im stressing out since i cant find what it is and alot of money has been spent. Please help.
Well the C1002 means that the brake lamp switch is constantly stuck on. By for the most common cause for this is a bad brake switch. It is located on the bracket above the pedal under the dash
Would help us to know which engine you have....
Would also help to know the following:
- How exactly were the plugs "messed up"?
- When does the misfire occur? (under 1/4 throttle or only WOT?)
- Do you have any Modifications installed?
- What kind of spark plugs did you install? (platinum, copper, iridium?)
- HOW MANY spark plugs have you replaced?
- Are you burning and oil or coolant?
- Is there any coolant in your oil? (pull dip-stick out and smell it, if it smells kinda like coolant then you may have something going on inside the motor)
We'll go from there, depending on your reply.

My truck is a 3.7l. I added an intake, throttle body spacer, hypertech programmer, and modified the muffler. I did notice that last time my truck started heating up and i had just cleaned out the radiator and had added antifreeze. As far as the spark plugs, i changed the six of them....the spark plug on cylinder 2 was chipped off...this happened with 2 weeks of use. The mechanic just put on double platinum. The problem can be felt as soon as i start driving...before it would be when i was going bout 50mph or going uphill. Im going to check the dip stick....ill post again
You might have a blown head gasket.... Also a lot of the Dodge Engines, don't respond well to Platinum plugs.... so you might want to try putting the regular copper core plugs in and if it goes away you're set.
The coolant smell in the oil is from coolant getting into the cylinder.... I wouldn't let it go to long without getting looked at as it will get worse over time.
If you want to confirm that's what it is before you spend a good amount of $ to get the head gasket replaced, have the mechanic perform a compression test... that will tell you for sure if it's the head gasket, it will also tell you how bad the damage is.
