Tire shopping for 20's
I just hit 50,000 miles on my 04 R/C 1500 hemi 4X2 with 20 inch wheels. I need tires before it snows...bad. The stock tires are still ok for sunny days and light rain but i feel I might die the first time it snows here in Chicago land so I still have a little time to shop around. The stockers (Goodyears) held up great, no dry rotting/cracking in the tread or anywhere else. I am a big time highway driver at 80 miles round trip for work on the tollway. Of course these tires are $800 to replace all four. I have been shopping pretty hard around here and I have found a sharp HANKOOK tire

at Pep Boys installed for about $700. Discount tires wants $922 for the same job. These tires have an "A" traction rating and are a 50,000 mile tire. What do you guys/gals think? Can anyone beat this deal? My factory Goodyears are 275/60/20 and these HANKOOKs are 275/55/20. No big deal right? It gave me some options and it will only be a little lower profile so i figured why not?

Seems like a pretty good deal. I personally don't care for the stock Goodyears as I have never met a Goodyear that I have liked. Plus I don't know why they put a sport tire on them anyway, they blow in the snow. I just got some BF Goodrich All-Terrain TAs that are 285/55/20 and I love them. Albeit they cost a lot more, but they will last a heck of a lot longer.
keep in mind that a 55 series tire is gonna be a smaller dia. they are 1/2" smaller doesn't sound like much but will be 22 rev per mile faster. which will change the speedo a bit ( when your doing 60mph your speedo will read 58mph) and can also have an affect on abs. Also keep in mind that tread design is not going to be that great in the snow.
I second tirerack. They have good prices and I believe as far as tire warranty goes, as long as a place sells it, they will warranty the tire, or at least they should. Just pay for mounting/balancing and you're good to go. That reminds me, I gotta get to rotating my tires.

I had no problems with the Goodyear Wrangler HP's on my truck till about a year and then I noticed that there were alot of cracks forming between the treads, much like dry rott on older tires. I am not sure how long these tires may have been sitting around before they were mounted on rims by the factory or under what conditions they store their tires but either way I find it unusual for new tires to develop this issue. Other than that they have been great tires, they are excellent in the dry and pretty good in the rain especially for OEM tires. Since I too have the 275/60-20's there arent a whole lot of choices unless I want to mess with getting the dealer to recalibrate for the 275/55-20's and in that case I would definitely go for the Bridgestone Dueler A/T with uniT. I had some on my last truck and they were awesome under all conditions.
i agree with avanti, www.tirerack.com best place you can go to buy tires. i've always had good success when dealing with them.
Thanks guys I will keep investigating. I think I have a hook up on the install so I can save some money there now. Internet looks like the way to go now. _Kevin
