Anyone done a Hemi Plug change?
I am at 50,000 miles and I NEED to do plugs and wires. Anyone done this themselves yet? Midas and the dealer both want about 500 bucks to do it!! Two hours labor and the brake booster needs to come out. Is this a big deal or just time consuming? Any tips or special tools required? Suggestions for plugs and wires also welcome I would like to make a nice up grade if i am going to do it myself. Thanks a lot --kevin
WOW! I am glad I checked with you guys first. The dealership was all over me to get it done at 35,000 miles!! Just shows you how the stealership is always gunning for the free money. My next stop was to check the owners manual but you just saved me the time thanks -KK
Uh,
You really need to change them at 35K. I don't know where that other guy got his info from but you should be more careful listening to unknown people on the internet.
You don't need to take out the booster, wrong.
It takes around and hour and a half with the right tools.

What KeniHemi said. You don't need to take out the brake booster. You need some various tools including extensions and "u-joints" so you have more manueverability of the wrenches. Also, make sure you get 16 plugs! Might have to go to a couple of places to get all 16, so be prepared.
Osteodoc - how do you get to the last two on the driver side? I have lots of extensions, u-joints, etc. but I just don't see how to get in there. I have an 03 hemi. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
I just did mine this weekend and Doc's right. NOBODY around me had 16 of the right plugs, so plan ahead--they may need to order them or like he says, make a couple of stops (makes you wonder why they'd only stock 8 for a Hemi application, but I guess that's a different subject). I also agree with the mileage...my 04 manual calls for them at 30k and I can tell the difference with new ones, so at 50 you definately need 'em.
Doc's also right that you don't need to take out the booster, but it is a pain getting the back two drivers side cylinders. Have a variety of extensions and a swivel and you'll get it. I also took off the pipe from the throttle body to the EGR valve on the passenger side, but you don't really have to.
If you can do them in an hour and a half, you're alot better than me...took me all afternoon, but then again, I spent the time with the radio on split betweeen listening to the POS Bears and the NASCAR race Sunday, so I was probably slacking some. Don't forget to use anti-seize on the threads and di-electric compound on the tips & in the ends of the boots---it'll make it a ton easier next time. Other than that, nothing special about it. I'd put it at about a 2.5 out of 5 on my pain in the *** meter.
I put the stock Champs back in, and it runs great--much smoother, plus only $1.29 ea at NAPA. A lot of guys like NGK's, but everybody agrees to not waste your money on multi-tips (ie Bosch +4). Plantinum will last longer than copper, but just stay with the single tip if you go that way. With the 2 plugs per cyl, you're getting plenty of spark, so I don't think you don't need to waste your money on exotic plugs. Just my opinion.

, now if it was the 4.7, then yes 30K you would have needed to change them, but not with the hemi
