electronic shift 4wd acting up
Here's the deal. I'll be driving in 2wd all day, park the truck for the night, get in the truck in the morning and it has switched itself into 4HI by itself. The selector switch is still on 2wd but it says 4HI on the dash light. I drove the truck and it was in fact in 4wd! I switched the selector from 2wd to 4wdAuto but "4wdAuto" was flashing green continuously on the dash. I switched it back to 2wd but 4wd HI started flashing on the dash and then stopped flashing and stayed in 4wd HI....
Then one day, I was in 2wd, parked it for the night, and in the morning the little red Neutral light was lit up on the selector switch but the truck would still drive?
No "Service 4wd" indicator either....
Any ideas?
2006 Sport Hemi 5.7L
Thanks

I'm sorry to hear about 4WD issues. When shifted into one of the 5 mode positions, the selected mode indicator light should flash until engaged and remain on to advise the driver of the current mode. The Neutral position is recommended for recreational towing only.
How often does this issue occur? When was the first time you noticed the concern? Have you had a chance to discuss it with your servicing facility?
Keep us posted if you can.
The Dodge dealer said bring it in so we can charge you up the ying-yang to TRY and diagnose it...lol They said to bring it in...
I bought the truck with 80,000KM on it and it just started doing it at 110,000KM...
It happens all the time now. Maybe a bad switch? Would a bad switch throw the "Service 4wd" indicator?

The dealer would have to examine the vehicle in order to investigate your concern further. The ability to duplicate the issue will help to efficiently locate the cause for concern.
The "Service 4WD" warning light will illuminate if it is recognized that the 4WD system is not functioning properly. For technical details regarding the function and affect of a bad switch is something that would best be discussed with the Service Manager.
In addition, I have posted a page from the 2006 Dodge Ram Owners Manual that references the "service 4WD" light.

So, the dealer said I need to replace the actuator AND the TIPM...??? He quoted me $2700 to do the repairs!!!! I asked if we could install the actuator and "flash" the TIPM but he said that wont work and that the problem will just come back. Also, he quoted the TIPM to be about $1100 but I found some online for $600...

I would FIRST replace the $30 4wd dash selector switch.
The replace the actuator.
Then if you still have "active" DTC codes replace the TIPM.
The TIPM needs to be Configured by the dealer. So, buying a $600 one online can be done, but you'll need to have the dealer install it and Configure it. IF they have a problem configuring it and it's toast, your out all that money. Best bet is to buy it directly from the dealer as they will warranty it.
Also, I almost shat myself when they said the old TIPM had a $600 core charge...lol Kinda funny how you can buy online for $600 with no core. Total BS.
My situation which is diff than yours btw: I TOLD the dealer my cluster was bad and they insisted it was the TIPM. They changed tipm and no change. Then tried to charge me for the TIPM and get this...I was still under warranty.wow. I bought a cluster that they would not warranty. I spent $321 and guess what...problem solved. They would not warranty me because they were blaming my aftermarket radio which has nothing to do with the speedometer. I was gonna take them to court but had no time to do so with schooling and all. I have 1.5yrs left to do and I may just file a motion because I was out $600 after all said and done. I did not pay for the TIPM.

this kinda sounds like the problems Im having with my 06 ram. Last year I replaced the switch becuz it wouldn't engage. This year I m kinda having the same problem but I was told it was the transfer case motor. Im on my 2nd motor in a months time. The first one they (dealership) put in when bad in like a month from being replaced. Sorry probably not much help, I guess Im just letting you know your not alone..

sounds like the TIPM or short in the wiring is burning out the transfer case motor...
Update on my problem...they pulled code C1405 TRANSFER CASE RANGE POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT HIGH.....
so I don't need an actuator....I need a transfer case shift motor AND the TIPM....

So, a few weeks ago they changed the TIPM and transfer case motor... the SERV 4WD light came on again today... very frustrating. $1900 at the dealer and the problem is back again... So if replacing the TIPM and transfer case motor fixed the problem for a few weeks...and now it is back, what do we check next??? The wiring between the TIPM and transfer case motor??? So lost.....
