Default Oil Leak / Oil Pan Gasket

I have a 2006 Ram 1500 5.7L 2WD that is losing oil. When I looked under the truck the oil was covering the tail piece of the transmission. I took it to a local repair shop and he said the oil pan was leaking and it would be around $500 to change it (4 hours labor).

#1 Would a leaking oil pan gasket cause the oil to run over the tail piece of the transmission and not down the oil pan?

#2 Does it really take 4 hours to change (don’t know what all needs to be done to get pan out)?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

The engine needs to be lifted some. You might want to clean it well so you can make sure its the gasket but when driving the air will blow oil backward toward the transmission. I think the book shows 4 hours. Someone short on money might try dropping the pan without lifting the engine and applying RTV but its not the recommend procedure.

Thanks, just thought there would be a little oil running down the oil pan if it was leaking.

WOW was going to have them change the oil pump while there but its $166 for my truck. What happened to the cheap $25 ones everyone is talking about?

Well I hope that the mechanic is sure its the pan gasket and not the crank seal. On my car it would drip down the back of the pan when parked. I have not had a pan gasket leak on the truck.

it would if it's a 4x4. It will get all over the tran pan because of wind. The oil travels down the side rails of the pan, to the tran cap/plate, drips off that and blown onto tran pan.

Wait 2x.. I dont know on the older model, they might have to lift the engine for clearance. I did not have to on my 2011. Just remove the cross brace.
it took me 4 hours, and that's crawling on the floor..
