Default A way to replace stock gauges with performance gauges?

I was driving my 2003 Dodge ram around and was considering the lack of numbers on the four lesser gauges. I started rolling around the idea of drilling the cluster out and installing something like Autometer gauges. Has anyone else done/thought this?

Leave the cluster alone, as messing with that will cause error codes.
Get yourself a 2 or 3 pod instrument grab handle pillar from ebay and wire in new gauges.
Voila.....job done.

Nah pull the dash, build a custom tubular dash and build a custom gauge pod out of some nice Autometer gauges and some sheet metal.
