Hey guys I got a 02 1500 with the 4.7, my problem is the truck has been making a knocking/taping sound for bout 2 months now but only on cold starts for bout 30 secs to a min. Within the last week it now also is letting a puff of white smoke out on startup. All the shops around want to hear the noise but since they can't(im 26 miles from town) they tell me its fine n don't worry till it gets worse when they can hear it. I no something is wrong n the last time this happened n I waited I ended up replacing the motor I don't want that again. Also the motor has bout 160xxx on it

Is it a knocking or a sort of rattle? The valvetrain on the 4.7L are notorious for clatter due to the lash adjusters being filled with deposits from dirty oil and causing them to stick or not function properly. The lash adjusters put tension on the rocker arm. Once they become dirty, they don't apply the amount of tension needed to the rocker arm which in turn, allows the rocker arm to move around which causes the clatter.

Sounds like a blown head gasket.
The knocking while cold is common on the 4.7 and could be a number of different issues or combination of different issues in the top end.
Check your coolant level. Monitor it for a while and see what happens. If you get a check engine light with any of the misfire codes it pretty much confirms a head gasket issue.
