$410 is too much… if you have the money to waist go for it.. If not I would buy filter kit from AutoZone..
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/2006-Dodge-RAM-1500-1-2-ton-2WD/Transmission-Filter-A-T/_/N-jo0cqZ6o2e7?filterByKeyWord=transmission+filter&fr omString=search
ATF 4 (7quarts) http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Castrol-Transmax-ATF-4-automatic-transmission-fluid/_/N-25aa?itemIdentifier=854272&_requestid=447150
Silicone http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Permatex-5-oz-14-g-Ultra-Black-hi-temp-RTV-silicone-gasket-maker/_/N-25a0?itemIdentifier=415412_0_0_
And take it to Jiffy lube or equivalent..have them do it .. if they have the machine then do a full (14 quart) change if not go with the (7quart) ..
Don’t forget to tell them it’s important to install the O-ring for the filter inside the trans first,
and not on the filter first before installation..
make sure you check the fluid level after driving for at least 10 minutes .. parked in neutral with the motor running on flat ground.. too much can be just as bad as not enough fluid too..

$410 is close to double what I pay at my local shop and that is for the full meal deal, flush transmission and converter with the filters.

The only reason to go back to the dealer is for warranty work. Dealer labor and parts are charged out at premium prices.

Yes it was high for the work to be done.

I went back to the local shop who had showed me the metal shavings in the transmission pan and they said they wont be able to change the filters and fluid and the transmission was not healthy.

So i went ahead with the dealer and used a coupon and paid 370 for everything. Also as a part of scheduled maintenance adjusted the bands and got checked out everything to make sure it was fine.

Since i got back the truck Friday evening it runs better (? or i just feel that because i put in $370), but drives good.

A friend of mine suggested that i change the transmission fluid in 2 weeks so it will help kind of flush all the fluid (not do a flush, but replace some old fluid with new). Is this necessary? I dont think it needs to be done, but if recommended i can do it.

Thank you all for the replies and help as always

Anyone who says they've "adjusted the bands" on a 545RFE is talking BS!
RFE refers to, rear wheel drive application and full electronic controls.
There are no adjustments for the bands in this transmission. Hence the words "fully electronic". It's all controlled by line pressures, by the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
So if this stealership has expressly said they've "adjusted the bands".......I'd be very wary of them.

abarmby, that was my mistake about the band adjustments on 545RFE.

Before i got the transmission filters and fluid changed i was reading up on scheduled maintenance i found online and it mentioned band adjustment (i did not pay attention to the transmission specs it was applicable to). I only mentioned scheduled maintenance after 100k to the dealer tech and he said they will do all the needful.

Thank you for correcting me

Do you think it is required to change the fluid again after a couple of weeks?

Hey man....no problem.
I thought the stealership were trying to stiff you there for a minute, by mentioning the bands and adjustments etc.
Didn't want that to happen to a fellow DF'er
As for more work to install the other filter they mentioned to you....... again BS.
Both filters are easily accessible with the pan off.
Ones a spin on cartridge filter and the other has a small O ring that needs to be replaced and then a small bolt holds the flat filter in place.
Easy peasy.
As for the fluid drop in 2 weeks.....it wouldn't hurt.
It'll dilute the rest of that old fluid still in there from the pan drop and freshen every thing up.
Good luck bud.

Al.

Is it advisable to go to some other shop to get this done or better spend the extra buck and stick to dealership?

At first they quoted me $260 and the called back again and said it is now $410 because the labor to change the sump filter is more work that they expected.

I found another thread here on the forums where the dealer changed only the sump filter for $60. Search for "wix-transmission-filter-change-now-problems-sos"

I don't mind spending $410 if that is the genuine parts + labor cost to do the job.

Please let me know your opinion.
the two filter kit at autozone is $25, 7 qts fluid $50, its a no brainer, just messy, look on you tube to find a video
