Default Rusty Rusty Brake Lines

Went to replace my rubber lines over the weekend and noticed just how bad the factory hard lines were. This truck is only 12 years old, it seems pretty unreasonable to me that the lines should be in this condition.

Fortunately I caught it before they ruptured, and new hard lines from the master to distribution blocks and abs line were only $12.75 each, plus all new rubber lines at all 4 corners.

Salt and sand. You live in the snow. 12yrs is pretty good.

Winter certainly doesn't help, but my old man has a 93 suburban with over 250k on it up in Wisconsin and his lines aren't even close to as bad as mine.

Spray Fluid Film on the steel lines every year. Steel lines will last forever.

12 years is great....

I used to see cars/trucks that need a complete replacement of all brake and fuel lines in 8 years around here...

I am a retired auto mechanic 43 years.. I have seen almost everything.

I live in the salt and snow, have had some cars just rust their brake lines like crazy and others not too bad. Depends on the winters it sees and how diligent you are in washing the underside I suppose.

hey chuck, where you located? Central ohio? Just curious, im from dublin near columbus.

Wow. Yeah, my truck is just as bad but didn't think the lines would be so cheap. I skipped replacing the calipers because I didn't think I would be able to replace the rubber lines. I'll have to rethink this. Also, same as you I'm disappointed in just how rusty they are.

All said and done it was pretty cheap to replace everything.

Front master hard line to distribution block $12.75 from Freedom Dodge
Front master hard lint to abs block $12.75 from Freedom Dodge
Front ABS to distribution block $12.75 from Freedom Dodge


Raybestos Front Right rubber line from Amazon $14.35
Raybestos Front Left rubber line / distribution blocks $31.74 from Amazon
Raybestos Rear hardline / distribution block $33.45
Dorman left rear metal hardline + rubber line $19.45
Dorman right rear metal line (have to cut off old line and flare the factory hardline) $17.12

Came with crush washers. Needed two big bottles of Dot3 to flush/bleed. All said and done probably $170 total in parts/shipping. I did all labor myself. Already had a new master from before I acquired the truck, and I replaced all the rotors, pads, calipers, and e-brake shoes about 2 years ago.

This is the dealer that had the factory hardlines in stock for good prices

I should add I only have rear wheel ABS, and the hard line from the block over to my passenger caliper was fine, and did not need to be replaced.
