Default 2005 dodge ram 1500 with 4.7 want to put a newer model year 4.7 in.

I have a 2005 ram 4.7 and want to know if I can replace mine with a 2008 4.7. I have a few mechanics who are willing to assist me so labour and time not an issue. Does anyone know if the 2008 4.7 motor will work in my 2005 ?

Why not just put a HEMI in it. You'll get better MPG and more power.

From everything I have read its a nightmare and expensive. The newer 4.7 has more power than the older ones. In my opinion it would be easier.

Why replace the engine if the truck runs fine? That's a lot if money down the drain that is most likely unnecessary. Save the money for other issues that a 9 year old vehicle is bound to have. You replace the engine with a newer one; great, the engine is updated. But the rest of the truck is still a 2005. Sounds pointless to me.

Careful, you're on shaky ground there! We're a [ram/mopar] truck enthusiast community, with strong ties to the modding community as well. All mods are pointless, a truck is perfectly functional from the factory. That doesn't mean none of us want to change what we have.

See here's the thing tbugden. What is pointless to you my not be to someone else. Thank for your two cents. I have a motor from a wrecked ram and it's a 2008. Seeing as it has a few more hp stock I was asking for a professional opinion on weather the 2008 motor would work in my truck. So if there is a professional or a person that can actually help my with my question I would love to hear from you.

Wait you already have the engine? That's a large part of the cost right there. Do it!

Edit - Actually, if It was me... I'd upgrade the internals on the donor 4.7 to accommodate some boost.

Trick to figure out is if you can adapt the newer heads to your old block. You will have to ignore one set of plugs or figure out a way to fire both. The newer cams from what I've heard are on par with old HO cams. The 08 manifold will bolt on, but you will need a TB adapter. Custom tuning is a must of course. This will get you more power, maybe not the 310hp the 08+ trucks have though.
