What happened here? Have a guess.
the wheel is broken.. then the axle.....
the wheel was slammed into something very hard.. and broke the axle/spindle .
I did a zoom in to 400 percent.... my opinion.
if the wheel had failed by itself.. spindle/axle would be OK..
and if spindle/axle failed.. wheel would not be broken..
again My opinion.. Retired auto mechanic ...43 years.

Don't waste your energy on getting to the truth. Use it instead on speculative guilt mongering...hehe.
As in: "Well, son we can't pay the gas bill this month because this costs 2,000 to fix."

It actually looks like the hub bearing failed which is what holds that part together.
He could ran up over a curb or something, but you would have other bent suspension parts.
I say it doesn't really matter what happened. If it's your truck and they borrowed it, they should pay for damages since that is beyond normal wear/tear.

Looks like the truck was run over a curb at substantial speed. I wonder if the a-frames are bent or the rack is damaged, that would almost be a given with that much damage. If not, it may be a bad bearing, as mentioned above, but I would have thought the bearing would have been making a lot of noise and wobbling around beforehand. Might do well to check the other one and see what condition its in.
