Default Pinion nut recall P77

Hey Folks

Apparently there was a recall for 2005 Ram's build between Jan 28 2004 and Aug 3 2015. It says that the pinion bearing may come loose causing shaft to drop and in some cases may cause rear end to lock up. Yesterday when leaving for work I heard a moan/groan sound when backing up and then a bit in drive and then it was gone.

I came home from work I looked down and saw some spots on the driveway under the approx. location of the rear diff. To my surprise there is gear oil sprayed all under the box so the pinion seal is leaking bad. Now here's the catch the recall is for 2005 and mine is a 2004? Second to that the remedy is to install a retention feature (lock washer?) to prevent pinion nut form coming loose.

So my question would be if a pinion nut came lose due to this issue and the diff either, seized or blew up would Dodge be on the hook to address? I have not dropped the axle yet, but for the amount of gear oil I can see this strikes as more then a leaky seal, more like a loose pinion nut and the seal worked itself loose and possibly a seized diff is just around the corner.

What do you guys think. here is the recall.

not likely.. seal failure likely.

if nut loosened.. the gear set would make lots of noise... or lock.

I have an 04. and are known for "C" clip to carrier failure, if you have the 9 1/4 rear... as I do...

Took my '05 in for the recall last week and they told me I'll get another notice when the parts are available. I'm told they will be replacing the pinion nut. Not sure exactly how an undersize spline causes a loose nut on the pinion unless the yolk is wobbling on it. I'm sure that could eat a seal. Better get it checked before something disastrous happens whether it's on a recall or not.

Default Old thread but new question

So, my truck, which was a daily driver but now is a weekend/hunting/etc. truck, had the P77 recall accomplished on 02/07/17. So less than three months later, and 330 miles, I see a seep from the rear pinion seal. Now I know my truck is 12 years old and almost 170K on the odo, but the rear was bone-dry with zero seeps or leaks until this recall was done.

The parts list on the repair order only mentions the CBHKM342-AA retainer, so nothing was removed, but according to the recall, the tech would have applied an initial torque of 50 ft/lbs, and if no movement, a final torque of 100 ft/lbs. If no movement, install the retainer. I believe somewhere in this process the pinion seal suffered damage or was shifted in position, causing the seep. I called the service advisor, then the manager, of the dealership that accomplished the recall, and while they request I bring the truck in for inspection, they believe they did nothing to cause the seep and that at 170K, the seal is old and failing.

So, if you have had the P77 recall C/W and only had a retainer installed, did you subsequently suffer a rear pinion seal seep or leak as a result, and if so, what was the outcome?
