Default 2 cats or 1

2003 1500 4x4 5.7L. I attempted to replace my O2 sensor today. According to Chilton, Haynes, Dodge dealer, my truck is supposed to have 2 cat conv's and 4 O2 sensors. WRONG!! I have 1 cat and 2 sensors.I contacred my Dodge dealer and he told me I should have 2 cats and 4 sensors. I contacted Autuzone and his info showed the same thing but interestingly Autozone;s info on my exhaust showed exactly what I have, 1 cat 2 sensors. So I don't know what to make of this, how does 1 sensor read right and left banks? The code we pulled said "bank 1 sensor 1". The guy at Autozone said take it out, bring it in and we will figure it out. RIGHT! Sounded good to me except there is NO way to get ANY kind of wrench on the sensor. The only way I can see to change that sensor is to take the exhaust pipe off. Am I missing something?

lots of reasons...

2003.. could have been a late 2002... or for Canada... other country..

if you look at sensor wrenches... lots of shapes... because... lots of difficult jobs.

in some cases.. I cut the sensor body in half... remove nut part of sensor.

Default Update

I think the dual cat converter set up is for California made trucks. Autozone has a set of O2 sensor wrenches that they let you use basically for free. You pay $30 deposit and get it back when you return the set of wrenches. Looks like those wrenches will solve the access problem.I will post my results if anyone is interested let me know here.

Well my 2003 1500 5.7L is SUPPOSED to have 2 cats & 4 sensors but it doesn't. Sure would like to know what's up with that?

If you e-mail Dodge.. with your VIN number.. they will send you the Build sheet... on mine. it states 49 state US version... Assembled in Texas....yours may have been built for someplace else... but did not ship or was returned???

does your engines numbers match the body and title?

I will check the nameplate vin # against my registration. Can you email me the contact email info for Dodge to obtain the build sheet info?

03 hemi has 1 cat, 2 O2 sensors. The 3 sources you referenced are my top 3 of sources not to trust. As per the 03 parts book, it's 1 cat.

Of course you are right, 1 cat, 2 sensors. That is what I kept telling all of my parts suppliers near me. They kept telling me it was supposed to be 2 cats, 4 sensors. Of course they would not listen to me because their computers said something else, oh well. I got the special sockets and could barely reach in and put it on the sensor then there was not enuff room to swing the wrench, I guess if I am going to fix this I will have to take it in. I discovered another problem while I was under the truck. So, I am done with this.
