Default Air compressor cycles on and off

I have a 2006 Ram that has an air conditioning problem. The compressor cycles on and off but doesn't cool any. It worked fine when I bought the truck for a couple of weeks, but one day I got in it and it wouldn't cool. I added some Freon but to no avail. I know the orifice tube can cause that, but, I was wondering if some other part of the system could be causing all the problem. The system wouldn't take much Freon, so, I know it wasn't the Freon. If anyone knows the system on these trucks or can shed some light, I would appreciate it. I just have never worked on this particular type of air conditioning system. Thanks.

Just an FYI, it's not "freon". That particular term refers to the refrigerant R-12 which is no longer used in automobiles. The "refrigerant" used now is called R-134. You really need to get a set of gauges on it and see what the system pressures are to determine a correct plan.

That is usually a sign of low refrigerant. There can be too much, as well. Have it tested. That isn't horribly expensive and you'll know where you stand. Is the condenser fan running? If not, the system won't be happy.
