Default 2004 ram 1500 question

2004 Ram 1500 4x4 with 85k miles

no engine codes at this time.

The past year my overhead readout on mpg is not reading correct. I have owned truck 5 years and riding around town it always averaged 15 mpg and about 21 on highway on readout.

Past year its reading about 7.5 on city driving.
Engine idles perfect plenty of power.

I changed plugs 2 times in 2 years and keep the vehicle in good condition.

Is there a way to calibrate the digital readout on above console?

Any sensors that might affect this readout?

would a map sensor affect any part of this?

What is your actual hand calculated mileage?

I never hand calculated but I know my gas consumption is not what the digital readout shows. My gas gauge seems to be the same when Im driving as to it moving for fuel consumption.
I just think the readout is way off and it was never like this. My drive to work always was about 14-15 mpg on readout and now 7.5 but like I stated my gas consumption by my gas gauge does not reflect the digital readout.

I read on one forum it might be the map sensor even though I have no check engine light or codes

Only way to get true mileage is to hand calculate.

Well the first thing you need to do is hand calculate actual fuel economy to see how much it's off by.

Secondly, need to know if the truck is a Hemi or 4.7 because they get their reading differently. I believe a Hemi, being fly by wire gets its reading off the throttle position sensor using the MM3 method. 4.7s are mechanical and from what I understand is read by vacuum...

The computer is pretty much always optimistic. There is only one way to determine fuel mileage.

Sorry its a 4.7 with 85k miles.

I guess my next step is to hand calculate and see what Im getting for mileage.

Again I'm not using excessive gas to reflect the 7.5 on the readout.

I will do a hand calculation next time I add gas

thanks

Do the hand calculation and start tracking it @ fuelly.com
